• Concept of “Defence and Attack in Unison” (顾打合一)

First, let me clarify that I am talking about one move (or each move) not multiple move to have “Defence and Attack in Unison” (顾打合一).

It is our aim to develop such an ability when crossing hands with someone, being either Spar or “Push Hands”.

    It requires

    1. Internal power: Put pressure to the other party, let him feel uncomfortable but you maintain “Central Equilibrium” (中定), not over committing. Follow the principle of three External Harmony (外三合). Power coming from the ground travel through the whole body (整劲).
    2. Sensing and sticking: from the touching point, one needs to quickly sensing the centre of your opponent and maintain that pressure towards that centre until the opponent losing his structure.
    3. Movement (身法): Body needs to be agile and feet need to be light so you can follow your opponent’s movement, keep up the pressure so he cannot get away.

“Sensing and Sticking” is really your defence mechanism in your attack movement. So your attack is safer and more reliable.

“Defence and Attack in Unison” (顾打合一) is really a training milestone. It showcases your overall fighting ability. Such a concept is a key principle in Chinese Internal Martial Art such as XingYi (形意) and Tai Chi.  Wu style (武式) Tai Chi also call it “Cover” (敷). It is certainly an important training aspect in our system.

Reflecting on some of the implication of form work we have learnt, it is true that there is always a Yin n Yang component which represents the Defence and Attach in Unison
