• Tai Chi’s fundamental 13 techniques

In the old days, Tai Chi also known as “Thirteen Shi” (十三式) translates as “Thirteen Postures”. It is derived from the 13 most fundamental techniques in Tai Chi training.

The 13 techniques are divided in two categories:

    1. Eight Jin (劲) or Power techniques which correspond to Yi Jing (易经)’s “Eight Trigrams” (八卦).  They are:

    • Peng (掤): Ward-off
    • Lu (捋): Roll-back
    • Ji (挤): Press
    • An (按): Push
    • Cai (采): Pull-down
    • Lie (挒): Split
    • Zhou (肘): Elbow strike
    • Kao (靠): Shoulder charge

The first four are cardinal directions. The last four are corner directions

    2. Five Movement techniques which correspond to Yi Jing (易经)’s “Five Elements” (五行). They are:

    • Jin (进): Advance
    • Tui (退): Retreat
    • Gu (顾): Step to your left
    • Pan (盼): Step to your right
    • Ding (定): Maintain Central Equilibrium

Pay strong attention to the above techniques while you learning Tai Chi.

Didn’t know the ‘Five elements’ before reading this one. My bad. At least I have completed my homework for this week now. Hope everyone else is going well.

I need to replicate the last four of the ‘Eight Trigram’ through 85 style. At this stage, these movements don’t click in my mind straightway yet.
